Air Transportation

Making your own transportation arrangements

We recommend you arrive at least 1 day before the cruise.

Flights are more readily available during non week-end days into the cruise port city because the cruise lines reserves most of the air flights for their customers during the sail dates. Thus making it difficult for those trying to use air miles or arrive at the same popular times the cruise lines have reserved for their passengers during the day the ship sails or returns to port. Flights are also less expensive during the week days. There are 2 close proximity airports to choose from, Los Angeles (LAX) and Long Beach (LGB) . Los Angeles is only 18 miles from the port, Long Beach is 10 miles but more difficult and usually more expensive to find a flight into. LAX is an international airport. That means it's big, high volume but pretty good rates. For those that were with us in 03, 04, think Miami airport but more organized. From the time your plane touches down expect approx. 40-60 minutes to claim your luggage and catch a cab, shuttle or rent a car and be on your way. Add another 20-30 minutes and you’re at the port or the host hotel. That’s about 90 minutes from touchdown till you get to the port or our host hotel

If you are making your own air arrangements into Los Angeles or Long Beach area on the same day as the ship sails and returns:

  • Arrival Flights on April 13th should arrive no later than 1:00pmYou must be on the ship by 3:30pm
  • Departure Flights on April 20 should depart no earlier than 12:00 pm. Remember it takes about 30 minutes travel time from the LA Harbor to LAX or Long Beach, allow 30-45 minutes to clear security and you have to check in your carry on luggage 1 hour prior to your flight time. So basically, it’s 2 hours from the time you leave the ship on your return until your ready to fly. We always like to add a 1 hour cushion just incase there are any delays.
  • Remember to allow for the time zone changes

Due to Royal Caribbean & Air Line regulation changes we will no longer be offering Airfare through Royal Caribbean as part of your cruise package - effective - October 15th 2007.

If you have already requested your airfare as part of your rally package before October 15th, 2007 your request will be honored, the following rules will apply.

  • There is a $ 75.00 charge for name changes or corrections, cancellation of airfare, or changes to air departure within 75 days of the cruise.
  • The cruise-line chooses the most reliable airline carrier approx. 30 days prior to your cruise date. This allows flexibility in case of airline problems such as strike, bankruptcy, schedule changes, etc.
  • Once your flight is booked as part of your rally package. The cruise-line will monitor your flight. They know if and why your flight is late and can delay ship departure if needed. You book your own airfare…you're on your own.
  • The cruise-line greets you at the LAX (Los Angeles) airport, directs you to your luggage, you collect your luggage, they load your luggage on a bus, transports you to the ship and transfers your luggage on board the ship. Reverse order when cruise is over.

GROUND TRANSFERS

You may purchase DEPARTURE transfers for April 20th once you get on the ship, if you only need transfers back to the airport for flights leaving after 12:30pm . Go to the Guest Relations deck once you are on the ship and they will take care of the departure transfers for you. If you have a flight leaving before 12:30pm shame on you! Get off the ship with the first group in the morning, take a taxi so you don't miss your plane.

making your own transfer arrangements from Los Angeles or Long Beach to San Pedro

For those flying into LAX and booking their own air; You can check out these transportation companies. They will provide transfers any day of the week from the airport to our guest hotel or the port. Most are located directly outside the airport terminal.

Rental Car Companies:

  • Enterprise   310 649 5400  (Also located at our Crowne Plaza Hotel for easy pick-up and return.)

Port of Los Angeles - World Cruise Terminal

The port terminal is actually in San Pedro, it's very large and well laid out. Recently renovated with a lot of thought, the people traffic is  amazingly calm with plenty of area for check-in and more than enough seats and lounge area. We watched 2 ships check- in and saw almost no congestion and if you arrive 1:30pm to 2:30pm you’ll miss the main rush completely. Must be that laid back California attitude combined with super friendly port employees. We were speechless and although we are happy with Port Canaveral for the Caribbean rally, you’ll be amazed how smoothly things run in San Pedro. Kinda like it was before 911 and homeland security ran wild. It sure does help that the port terminal is twice the size of any port terminal we have ever used. Located less than 18 miles from LAX airport and less than 1 mile off Interstate 10 makes it very convienent. It’s very easy to locate by Los Angeles standards.

Parking at the port is outdoors, secure and right at the port terminal. Cars, trucks, R.V.’s, and motorhomes are welcome but there is no indoor parking for bikes or cars, check the Hotel listings below for indoor parking for bikes and cars.

Cost at the port is $12 per day per parking spot. If you take up 2 spots, that’s $20 per day. If you are staying at one of our hotels ask about their park and sail package, they shuttle you to the ship on sail day and back to the hotel when you return to get your vehicle. If you’re riding your bike, we recommend you park indoors at the CrownePlaza hotel. If you are trailering your bike you must either park it at the port or you can use our recommended DoubleTree Marina Hotel.

Motorcycle Transportation

We have been asked in the past to recommend a shipper to ship our passengers bikes to our events, so you can ride before the cruise. We have been looking but never quite found a company we could recommend that meets our standards. Some were good price, but slow or careless with your bike and frequent small damages. Some were expensive with the same results. This year we needed a shipper to move our HOHS Dialysis Raffle Bike, back from Daytona so now we had to find someone and our shipping luck in the past had been poor. We have shipped twice....damaged twice. But while we were scratching our heads in Daytona this year, one of our passengers and helper Kenny Detig recommended we check this guy out.

Sam Terry of KEYBOARD MOTORCYCLE SHIPPING. We are hard to impress but I've never seen a set up like this. They go over your bike with a fine tooth comb before it's ever loaded. They found stuff I never even noticed and I cleaned this bike every day for 9 days. After the white glove show bike inspection, your bike is put into it's very own pallet on wheels and secured by the bikes wheels not by ratcheting it down until the suspension bottoms, sometimes blowing out the seals. Not only can your bike not move but the pattet extends out all around so no other bike can even get near your bike. With over 85 tractors, 110 trailers and a warehouse on both coasts, it's like the Fed-Ex of motorcycle moving. Talk about service. Say your bike got the paint scratched while you were at Strugis and you really didn't want it to show up back home with that scratch? They will do the paint work for you (for a fee), and when it's delivered, your baby is like new again, and that includes custom paint touch-ups too. So if you want to have your bike shipped anywhere in the US, these guys should be your first call, mention you're a HOHS rally crewmember. Maybe in the future, if enough of our passengers start using them we can get a rally discount.

Double Tree Hotel - San Pedro

2800 Via Cabrillo Marina

San Pedro, CA 90731

Phone 310-514-3344

The Alternative hotel we recommend is the Double Tree Marina Hotel. It is also a very nice hotel located less than 2 miles from the Crowne Plaza but in an entirely different setting. Very quiet, directly at the marina away from downtown but also a little out of walking distance to many activities and restaurants but with easy taxi and shuttle service. If you’re a boat or yacht  enthusiast, or prefer sunsets on the water directly outside your window it’s hard to beat. The hotel itself does have a fine restaurant too.Parking during the cruise is FREE with your hotel stay. There is a cost to shuttle you to the cruise ship however. See below under Transportation. If you are trailering your bike ask about praking your trailer at this hotel. They will allow a small number of trailers. Our Crowne Plaza Hotel also provides FREE shuttle service to this location. Again, make sure you tell them you are with the Hogs on The High Seas.
